Carla Cascales is an independent designer and artist from Barcelona, passionate about textures, minimal compositions, organic materials and geometry, she recently discovered the Japanese view of beauty and was fascinated, specifically the Wabi-sabi and their admiration for the imperfect, mutable and incomplete things.
Another concept Carla found very metaphorical in the Japanese culture is Kintsugi, a technique to repair fractures of ceramic with resin or varnish sprinkled with gold. It suggests that breakage and repairs are part of the history of an object and it’s shown instead of being hidden and says it’s more beautiful, stronger, for having been broken.
These concepts apply not only to objects but also to people, accept the passage of time and consider it an element of beauty, show our scars that make us stronger, she thinks “they are concepts in harmony with life that help us to be happier and live better.”
On the other hand, she is also fascinated by minimalism, simplicity, contemporary art, modern architecture, Bauhaus, Alvar Aalto… She likes mixing these different streams such as organic shapes with geometry; and the beauty imperfections of nature with the purity of polished materials.
Those sculptures are unique pieces, nonrepresentational, built from the finest materials rescued or found. All the materials she used to build the sculptures are pieces that can no longer be used in industrial manufacturing, like broken or irregular parts marble, wood or granite that are discarded despite being beautiful.
